I made this box:

I used a 2×4 from the scrap bin. It was too long, about a foot, so I used the compound miter saw to cut it down to about 4 inches. Then I used the band saw to cut it into two pieces: thin side for the lid, and thick side for the box. This was easy enough, but I didn’t get a very even cut.
I realized at this point I should have sanded it before cutting it. Oh well. I sanded the edges and corners of the now-two parts. Then I took it to the drill press and hollowed out the box part. I used a mallet and a chisel to clear away as much of the remaining wood as I could. I was careless, and accidentally chipped away part of the side of the box:

Finally, I drilled a pilot hole through one of the corners (another thing I should have done before cutting it) and fastened the lid to the box with a screw.
